Google Play gives Android users something iPhone does not: the option to pause a subscription instead of killing it. It also shares the same blind spot - it only knows about the subscriptions Google itself bills.
You keep access for the time you have already paid for. Google’s own example: buy a one-year subscription on 1 January for $10 and cancel on 1 July, and you keep access until 31 December, with no charge the following January. There is no advantage to delaying the cancellation until the end of the term - cancel as soon as you have decided, and use what is left.
This is a genuine Android advantage over iPhone, and it is under-used. If you want a break from a service rather than a permanent exit, you can pause payments and keep your account, history, and settings intact:
To come back early, open the subscription and tap "Resume". If you already cancelled and changed your mind, the same screen offers "Resubscribe".
If a subscription is missing from the list, the usual cause is that it belongs to a different Google Account - sign in with the account that actually holds it and check again. The other cause is that Google never billed it in the first place, which is covered below.
Past subscription periods generally cannot be refunded, though Google’s refund policies carve out exceptions. An unused prepaid plan is the clearest case where a refund may be available. As with everything else here, this applies only to purchases Google processed - a subscription billed directly by the company is that company’s refund policy, not Google’s.
The Play Store subscriptions screen lists only subscriptions billed through Google Play. Anything charged directly by the merchant is invisible there:

This is the same structural gap Apple has. Between them, the two stores can show you two partial lists and no combined view - and the charges that get forgotten are almost always the ones outside both.
