You Must Cancel Where You Subscribed

This single rule explains almost every failed ChatGPT cancellation. If you subscribed inside the ChatGPT iOS app, the subscription lives under your Apple Account, not your OpenAI account - Apple is the merchant, Apple takes the payment, and only Apple can stop it. The same is true of a subscription started through Google Play. OpenAI states it plainly in the other direction too: a subscription created on chatgpt.com must be cancelled on chatgpt.com.

The practical consequence is that clicking around in ChatGPT settings looking for a cancel button you cannot find is not a bug. It means your billing is somewhere else.

How to Tell Which One You Are On

• Search your email for a receipt. A receipt from Apple or an invoice from Apple means Apple billing; a Google Play order confirmation means Google billing; a receipt from OpenAI or Stripe means direct billing
• Check your card or bank statement - the merchant name on the charge tells you the same thing
• Open Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Subscriptions in the Play Store on Android. If ChatGPT is listed there, that is where it is billed

Cancel ChatGPT on the Web (chatgpt.com)

1. Log in to ChatGPT with the account that is being charged
2. Select your profile icon, then select "Settings"
3. Select "Billing"
4. Under "Cancel plan", select "Cancel"
5. Confirm, and keep the confirmation email

Cancel ChatGPT on iPhone (Apple Billing)

1. Open the Settings app
2. Tap your name at the top (this is your Apple Account)
3. Tap "Subscriptions"
4. Tap ChatGPT in the list
5. Tap "Cancel Subscription" and confirm

Cancel ChatGPT on Android (Google Play Billing)

1. Open the Play Store signed in with the same Google account you used to subscribe
2. Go to Subscriptions
3. Select ChatGPT
4. Tap "Cancel subscription" and follow the instructions

You can do the same thing from a computer on the Google Play website while signed in with that account - Manage, then Cancel subscription.

Timing: Cancel 24 Hours Before the Renewal

Cancellation takes effect the day after your next billing date, so you keep Plus or Pro features until the end of the cycle you have already paid for. To avoid being charged for the next period, OpenAI advises cancelling at least 24 hours before your next billing date. Cancelling on the morning of the renewal is cutting it too fine.

Can You Get a Refund?

Subscription fees are generally non-refundable, but there are two real exceptions worth knowing:

• EU, UK, and Turkey: you are eligible for a prorated refund if you cancel within 14 days of purchase
• Accidental purchases: generally eligible for a refund if you make contact within 14 days of the charge

To request one, log in to help.openai.com with the same OpenAI account that was charged, open the chat widget at the bottom right, and ask for a refund. The system shows a summary of your eligibility before connecting you to an agent, and approved refunds are processed within 5 to 7 business days. If Apple or Google took the payment, the refund request goes to them instead, not to OpenAI.

The Wider Problem: AI Subscriptions Multiply Quietly

ChatGPT is rarely the only AI tool on the card. Between assistants, image generators, transcription tools, and writing add-ons, most people who pay for one pay for three - each one signed up for during a busy week and each one renewing on a different date. They are also unusually easy to forget, because there is no physical delivery and no monthly statement to prompt a review.
