How to Cancel Amazon Prime (and Get a Refund if Eligible)

A step-by-step guide to cancelling Amazon Prime, skipping the retention screens, and knowing when you qualify for a refund on unused benefits.

Cancelling Prime is straightforward in principle, but Amazon deliberately adds friction: a series of screens offering reminders, pauses, and discounts designed to talk you out of leaving. The trick is knowing that the real cancel button sits at the end of that maze.

Cancel Prime Step by Step

  1. Sign in at amazon.com and open "Accounts & Lists"
  2. Select "Prime Membership" (or "Prime" from the menu)
  3. Choose "Manage Membership" → "End Membership" (sometimes labelled "Update, Cancel and More")
  4. Click through the retention offers - decline each one
  5. Confirm the cancellation and note the end date shown

Will You Get a Refund?

Whether you get money back depends on your plan and how much you have used:

  • Annual plan, no benefits used this term: typically a full refund
  • Annual plan, benefits already used: a prorated refund or none, depending on usage
  • Monthly plan: usually no refund - the membership simply runs to the end of the period
  • In the EU, a 14-day right of withdrawal can apply to a recent renewal - cancel promptly to use it

Cancel a Prime Free Trial

If you are on a Prime free trial, cancel before it ends and you will not be charged - and you usually keep the benefits until the trial expiry date. Cancelling early does not cut the trial short. For the full playbook on timing trial cancellations, see our guide on cancelling a free trial before you get charged.

Other Amazon Subscriptions to Check

Cancelling Prime does not stop the other recurring charges Amazon bills separately. Check each of these under "Memberships & Subscriptions":

  • Prime Video Channels (e.g. add-on streaming services)
  • Audible credits and memberships
  • Kindle Unlimited
  • Subscribe & Save recurring deliveries

Keep an Eye on Recurring Amazon Charges

Because Amazon spreads subscriptions across several products, it is easy to cancel Prime and still be paying for an Audible plan or a Prime Video channel you forgot about. A single dashboard that lists every recurring charge - Amazon and otherwise - makes these easy to spot before they renew.
